World Series Champs
The 14U Cenla Sluggers went undefeated to win the 2009 USSSA World Series in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They started out Monday, July 12th by winning one game and losing one in the pool play. They bounced back Tuesday and won 2 more games in the pool play for seeding.
They started the tournament Wednesday with a win. Then Thursday they won 3 more games in the tournament, making them the only team in the winner’s bracket. There were 3 teams still in the loser’s bracket. The Sluggers were able to sleep in and rest Friday while the teams in the loser bracket fought it out for the right to meet the Sluggers in the Championship game Friday evening.
There were too many outstanding plays to describe during the 9 games, but we want to report on a couple that occurred in the last game. One was a triple play.  There was a runner on 1st and one on 2nd. A fly ball was caught by the first baseman who stepped on the base to get the runner before he returned to 1st, then threw the ball to 2nd who stepped on the base to get the runner before he could return to the base. Another special play was at home plate. A runner was trying to steal home as the pitch was being delivered. Mitchell tagged him out as he was trying to reach home plate.
The Sluggers had some great pitching, but again we want to report on the last game. The Sluggers won the game 2 to 0, thanks to some great pitching by Jon Taylor, who pitched 4 innings and Sloan Dieter who came in and pitched the last three innings to complete the shutout.
Mitchell and Sloan both received individual awards.
